General Information
Radio 1's Big Weekend is coming to Herrington Country Park in Sunderland, and we can't wait to welcome you!
To help everyone enjoy a smooth, safe and enjoyable event, you MUST plan your travel in advance.
We strongly urge visitors to book shuttle buses from official transport hubs to get to the event as quickly and seamlessly as possible, providing direct and stress-free travel.
Important Information
There will be no parking within the residential streets around the festival site, as a Resident Protection Zone will be in place which will only allow access to residents throughout the weekend. A resident permit will be required to gain access.
There will be no parking at the venue (except for accessible customers with pre-approved accessible parking).
Pre-Booking Required
Car parks, shuttle services and regional coaches will all be available to pre-book when tickets go on sale. Timing schedules for shuttle services, car park locations and opening and closing times will be published at point of sale.

Getting to the Event
Transport Hubs & Shuttle Services
Using an official transport hub is strongly recommended to access the event. All hubs run direct shuttle services straight into Herrington Country Park, providing stress free travel.
Recommended metro stations are Heworth and Park Lane which both have shuttle services to the event site and back after the event finishes. The current timetable for the Metro can be found at https://www.nexus.org.uk/metro. Please note that this timetable is subject to change and will be increased across the event weekend.
Regional Coaches
Regional coach return journeys are available from 23 locations within the North East Combined Authority and the Tees Valley Combined Authority region. Pre-booking of these services will be required.
No parking at Herrington Country Park except for pre-approved accessible parking
There will be no parking within the residential streets surrounding the festival site. A Resident Protection Zone will be in place which will only allow access to residents, and a permit will be required to gain access
All official event car parks will be within 45 minutes walking distance or connected to a shuttle hub
The closest National Rail station is Sunderland Central, a short walk from the Park Lane shuttle services; other stations available are Heworth, Newcastle and Durham.
Those who wish to use National Rail to Sunderland Central, and Heworth will be within walking distance of a shuttle service to the venue.
If you wish to arrive at Durham Railway Station please make your own way to Belmont Park and Ride to use the shuttle service. If you wish to travel to Newcastle Station please use the Metro to Heworth to access a shuttle to the Venue.
Travel Tips
Please use your preferred booking platform to purchase your train tickets. We strongly recommend booking in advance. Before you travel, please check for any rail disruptions or timetable changes and ensure you fully understand your route, including any required connections, replacement bus services and last operating departures.
A Pick-Up and Drop-Off (PUDO) facility will be available at Herrington Country Park for visitors travelling to and from the event by private vehicle.
Pre-Booking Required
If you intend to use the PUDO facility, you must pre-register for a designated time slot in advance. This helps manage traffic flow and ensures the system operates as efficiently as possible.

Access will only be granted to registered vehicles with a valid booking
Important Information
Please be aware of the following when planning your journey:
The PUDO system operates on a one-way traffic route
The facility is expected to be very popular
Waiting times may occur, particularly during peak arrival and departure periods
Please follow all steward and traffic management instructions on the day
Consider Alternative Travel Options
To help reduce congestion and improve access for all visitors, we strongly encourage the use of alternative transport options where possible, including:

Dedicated shuttle bus services
Using these services will help provide a smoother and more efficient journey to and from the event.
Pick up and drop off via app-based taxi services or via Hackney Carriages will not be available from Herrington Country Park. Please do not attempt to be collected or dropped off in this location. Please use our transport hubs located at Heworth Metro Station, Park Lane Metro Station and Durham Belmont Park and ride and use our shuttle service to the park.

Local residents and nearby visitors may use designated walking routes to Herrington Country Park:
Safety Notice
Do not attempt to cross the A19 via the A183 roundabout due to event road closures. Alternative routes are in place in the interest of public safety.
By Bike
Cyclists are welcome to cycle directly to the venue where bike parking will be available. Please do not attempt to use one of our shuttle services with a bicycle, please find secure cycle storage before embarking.
Accessibility Travel Information

Applications will be live on Wednesday 18th March 2026.
You will receive a confirmation email of all of your approved facilities on receipt of application, including parking.

Important: Blue Badge Information
Blue badges will not be valid on the day of the event as event specific parking passes will be issued to all pre-approved applicants in advance of the show. This is so that we can allocate the correct number of parking spaces required.
Arriving by Public Transport
If you plan to travel to the event by public transport, there will be a dedicated shuttle bus service with accessible facilities taking customers directly to a dedicated drop off point at the event.

If you have been pre-approved for accessible parking, you will receive a confirmation email with your parking pass within the week prior to the event. You may print your parking pass at home before arrival, but if this is not possible please have it ready to present on your phone.
The accessible car park is located within close proximity to the main entrance, approximately 200m away, across a grass route.
The exact location of the accessible car park along with arrival information will be included in the accessibility guide that will be sent to all accessibility customers closer to the event.
Accessible Pick Up & Drop Off
If you have confirmed that you will be dropped off at the event in your accessibility application, you will be sent a drop off pass within the week prior to the event. You may print your drop off pass at home before arrival, but if this is not possible please have it on your phone ready.
If you are getting dropped off or picked up at the event either by a friend, family, private car or taxi, exact details of the drop off point will be included in the accessibility guide that will be sent to all accessibility customers closer to the event.
